Trapp Family Lodge

Resort founded by the real von Trapp family, with 2,600 acres of cross-country ski trails and mountain views

The Trapp Family Lodge sits on 2,600 acres of rolling hillside above Stowe village, with views across the valley to Mount Mansfield that make the comparison to Austria understandable. The lodge is a full resort with rooms, a spa, and a restaurant — but non-guests can access the trails and explore the property. In winter, the lodge operates one of the best cross-country ski trail networks in New England, with over 60 km of groomed tracks through the wooded hills.

In summer, the same trails become hiking and mountain biking paths. The Von Trapp Brewing company is based on the property and runs a bierhall with Austrian-inspired food and lagers brewed on site — a good lunch stop even if you're not staying. The lodge also hosts the occasional outdoor concert and cultural event. It earns its reputation as a genuine destination rather than just a name.

A story
Maria von Trapp, who fled Austria with her family before World War II and whose story inspired The Sound of Music, chose Stowe because the Vermont hills reminded her of the Austrian Alps. She bought the farm in 1942. The original lodge burned down in 1980; the current building is a replacement, but the von Trapp family still operates the resort.
