Middleburg

Virginia hunt-country town of horses, vineyards, historic inns, and a compact Federal-era main street.

Middleburg is a small town with a very clear sense of itself: horses, hunt-country estates, Virginia wine, and a main street that still feels like a coach stop between Washington and the Blue Ridge. It is close enough to the capital for a day trip, but it is not trying to be suburban.

The historic district is compact, with stone buildings, Federal-style houses, boutiques, galleries, and old inns lining Washington Street. Step a few blocks out and the town gives way quickly to paddocks, vineyards, and rolling Piedmont countryside.

It is at its best for travellers who like a slow, well-fed day: visit the National Sporting Library & Museum, walk the historic district, taste local cider or wine, and end at the Red Fox Inn if your budget allows. Middleburg is polished, but the horse-country identity is real enough to make it more than a pretty shopping stop.
