Colonial Williamsburg operates several period taverns in the historic area — the King's Arms, Chowning's, Shields, and Christiana Campbell's — that serve 18th-century-inspired menus in candlelit rooms with costumed servers. These are genuinely atmospheric and the food quality has improved considerably; reservations are advisable in summer and on weekends. Prices are moderate to high.
Outside the historic area, Richmond Road and Prince George Street near the college have a more diverse range of independent restaurants catering to the student population and the residential community. The Merchants Square area just east of the historic district has the highest concentration of good options in a walkable cluster.
