Bellevue Arts Museum

BAM focuses on craft, design, and contemporary art — a niche that sets it apart from Seattle's larger institutions and gives it a clear identity. The permanent collection leans toward works made by hand: studio glass, ceramics, textile art, and sculpture. Rotating exhibitions are consistently well-mounted and often feature Pacific Northwest artists alongside international makers.

The building itself is worth the visit for anyone interested in architecture: Steven Holl's design plays with light through perforated screens and narrow vertical slots that shift dramatically with the weather. Located in downtown Bellevue's Lincoln Square area, it anchors the city's modest but genuine arts district.

A story
The current Steven Holl-designed building opened in 2001 and is considered one of the architect's finest works in the Pacific Northwest. Holl described its three interlocking volumes as representing "bridges, filters and screens" — meaning you move through the building almost as much as you look at the art inside it.
