Chuckanut Drive

Chuckanut Drive (State Highway 11) is a 35-km scenic road that winds along the face of the Chuckanut Mountains between Bellingham and Burlington, with cliffs on one side and Samish Bay on the other. It was the first paved scenic highway in Washington State and remains one of the most beautiful drives in the Pacific Northwest — all mossy rock walls, bay views, and old-growth fir overhanging the road.

The drive takes about an hour at a relaxed pace, with worthwhile stops at Larrabee State Park, the Chuckanut Bay Gallery, and the oyster bars clustered at the south end — Taylor Shellfish and Chuckanut Manor both have waterside tables and serve local oysters grown in the bay below. The road is narrow and winding in places and best driven south to north so that the bay views are on the driver's side.
