Shanghai Garden

Shanghai Garden is the best known Chinese restaurant in the International District, celebrated specifically for its hand-shaved noodles — thick, irregular ribbons cut to order from a block of dough and dropped straight into the wok. The dish to order is the shaved noodles with seafood, though the pea shoots with garlic and the Peking pork chops have their partisans.

The restaurant is at 524 6th Ave South, a few blocks from King Street Station. It is plain and functional, the service is fast, and the prices are low. Come at noon on a weekday and you will be eating alongside the neighbourhood's Chinese-American community, which is the best possible recommendation.
