The Fayetteville Historic District covers roughly six blocks around the courthouse square — late-Victorian commercial buildings of pressed brick and stone, a couple of early hotels, the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building (1922), and several streets of restored Queen Anne and Folk Victorian houses. The whole district was added to the National Register in 2011.
The 1922 Altamont Hotel, now in mixed use, was once the place coal-company executives stayed when they came up from Charleston. The Esso Station on Court Street is a fine intact 1930s petrol station, also listed. Most can be seen in a single walking loop of an hour or so.
