Buffalo Bill State Park wraps around the reservoir west of Cody, where the Shoshone River is held back below the Absaroka Range. It is a landscape stop as much as a recreation area, with open water, dry hills, and big Wyoming sky.
Most travellers pass this way en route to Yellowstone's East Entrance, but it is worth slowing down for the dam, viewpoints, picnic areas, or a short walk. In summer it also works for boating and camping, though wind can make the reservoir feel wilder than it looks on a map.
