Buffalo Bill Cody built the Irma Hotel in 1902 and named it after his daughter. The building is still operating and still anchors the east end of Sheridan Avenue. The main draw is the carved cherrywood bar in the saloon, which runs the full length of the room and was reportedly a gift from Queen Victoria to Buffalo Bill following his Wild West show's London performances. Whether the royal provenance is precisely accurate is debated, but the bar is unquestionably magnificent Victorian craftsmanship.
In summer, gunfight re-enactments are staged on the street outside the hotel, which is theatrical but not without its charms. The hotel rooms themselves are comfortable rather than luxurious; you are paying for the address and the history. Stop in for a drink at the bar even if you are not staying — it is one of the better historical interiors in Wyoming.
