College Inn Bar

The College Inn Bar has been serving drinks from the same building at the same address since 1906, making it the oldest surviving business in Douglas and Converse County. The original bar itself — a Brunswick-Balke Cabinet Company piece with elaborate woodwork, marble, and mirrored back bar — is still in place. The mirrors were painted with western scenes in 1953, and two stuffed golden eagles still crown the arched vision screen with its stained glass inserts.

The bar was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, a distinction that says something about the quality of what survived here. It succeeds an even older establishment: a frame saloon known as Lee Pringle's operated on this site from 1887, and the current brick building was put up in 1906 by Theodore Pringle to replace it. Come in the evening when the ranching community uses it as it has always been used — as a place to drink and talk after a long day on the land.
