At 10,275 feet, Laramie Peak is the only summit in the Laramie Range to top 10,000 feet and is visible from Douglas on clear days — a jagged crest rising above the rolling high plains to the south. The standard route to the top starts at Laramie Peak Trailhead, about 47 miles from Douglas via Wyoming Highway 94 and Forest Road 661, and covers roughly ten miles round trip with 2,700 feet of elevation gain. It is rated moderate to difficult and rewards the effort with panoramic views of several states and mountain ranges.
The trailhead is accessed through the Esterbrook area of the Medicine Bow National Forest, where the Esterbrook Campground offers a base for those who want to make a longer stay of it. The campground sits in a pine forest along a ridge north of the peak, with 12 campsites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. The $5 daily parking fee at the trailhead is the main cost. Bring water, start early, and be ready for afternoon thunderstorms in summer — Wyoming mountain weather changes fast.
