North Platte River Fishing

The North Platte River runs through and south of Douglas, and it offers blue-ribbon trout fishing that is accessible practically from the town centre. The river holds strong populations of brown and rainbow trout, and fly fishing is the standard method. Public access is generous: from I-25 Exit 140, about a mile of riverbank is accessible on both sides, and the South Douglas Public Access Area, three miles south on Wyoming Highway 94, opens up nearly eleven miles of river across seven parking areas.

Rafting and kayaking are also possible on this stretch of the river in spring and early summer when water levels allow. Several local outfitters offer guided fly fishing trips, gear rental, and tuition for those new to the technique. Wyoming fishing licenses are required for anyone 14 or over and can be purchased at local vendors in Douglas. The season runs from January through October on most sections of the North Platte.
