The port district of Ingeniero White, about five kilometres south of the city centre, is the most characterful part of Greater Bahía Blanca. This industrial port neighbourhood is simultaneously the origin of some of Argentina's most celebrated tango music — several famous tangos of the early 20th century were written here or named for this part of the country — and a working waterfront where grain elevators and petroleum facilities dwarf the small wooden houses.
The neighbourhood has a cluster of seafood restaurants along the waterfront, considerably better than what you will find in the city centre. The Museo del Puerto (Port Museum), housed in a historic customs building, documents the waves of Italian and Spanish immigrants who settled here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the labour history of the port, and the tango tradition. On weekends the waterfront becomes livelier with families eating grilled fish and watching the port activity. Worth an afternoon combined with lunch.
