Curutchet House

Le Corbusier's compact La Plata house, now part of a transnational UNESCO World Heritage listing.

Curutchet House is the one Le Corbusier building in Argentina and one of the most rewarding architecture stops in La Plata. It was designed in 1948 for Dr Pedro Domingo Curutchet on a narrow urban lot facing Paseo del Bosque, with a clinic on the lower level and family spaces wrapped around a small tree-filled courtyard above.

The house is small, but it distils a lot of Le Corbusier's ideas: pilotis, ramps, roof terrace, brise-soleil, and a careful play of light through tight volumes. Visits are best for travellers who enjoy modern architecture, but even a quick stop makes sense if you are already walking between the park, the museums, and the cathedral.
