El Calafate exists to serve the Perito Moreno glacier, eighty kilometres west, and nearly everything bookable here is about it: the walkways facing the ice front, boat trips across the lake to the glacier's face, and minitrekking on the ice itself with crampons. The glacier sits inside Los Glaciares National Park, and the operators below take bookings on WhatsApp.
Further up the lake the boats go through icebergs to the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers, which you cannot reach by road, and a few operators head the other way, out into the steppe for condors, rock paintings and penguins.
