El Doradillo

Pebble beach north of Madryn where southern right whales often pass close to shore.

El Doradillo is the place that can make a Puerto Madryn trip feel miraculous. From June to December, southern right whales use the deep water close to shore, and at the right tide you may see them rolling, breathing, and nursing calves just offshore.

The beach itself is simple and exposed, with little shelter from wind. Check tide and whale reports before going, bring warm layers even on a clear day, and resist the temptation to rush: the best sightings often come after half an hour of quiet watching.

A story
El Doradillo works because the beach drops quickly into deep water. In whale season mothers and calves can come astonishingly close to the pebbles, making it one of Patagonia's rare places where land-based whale watching can beat a boat.
