Casa Murillo is the former home of Pedro Domingo Murillo, the independence leader executed in Plaza Murillo in 1810. The house has been preserved as a museum on Calle Jaén — La Paz's most intact colonial street — and gives a good picture of how a prosperous creole household lived in late-colonial Bolivia. The rooms are furnished in period style, and the courtyard is one of the better preserved examples of the Andean colonial domestic architecture in the city.
The museum also contextualises Murillo's role in the 1809 independence uprising — one of the earliest in South America — and the broader colonial history of upper Peru (present-day Bolivia). Labels are in Spanish. It forms part of a cluster of four small museums on Calle Jaén that can all be visited in sequence; the combined entrance tickets are good value.
