Parque El Montículo

Small hilltop park in Sopocachi with one of the best city views in La Paz

A small hilltop park in the Sopocachi neighbourhood that offers one of the best panoramic views of La Paz. From the summit, the city spreads below in its canyon, with the altiplano visible to the west and Illimani's white peak to the southeast on clear days. The park is compact and pleasant, popular with local families in the morning and courting couples in the evening.

Getting here from Plaza Avaroa takes about 15 minutes on foot uphill. There are benches near the top and a small cafe. The view is best before 10am when the air is still clear. Go early, dress warmly — even at midday in summer La Paz cools down quickly when cloud moves in, and at altitude the sun sets the temperature, not the season.

A story
Parque El Montículo was created in the 1940s from what had been a private hill and lookout. The statue of the condor at its summit is one of La Paz's more enduring symbols — it appears on postcards from the 1950s onward. On clear mornings the view from here to Illimani is one of the more reliable in the city, since you're looking east and the mountain doesn't get lost in afternoon cloud.
