Valle de la Luna

Surreal eroded clay spires and canyons south of the city

About 10 kilometres south of the city centre, the Valley of the Moon is an eroded landscape of clay spires and canyons that looks nothing like what surrounds it. The formations are the result of centuries of rain cutting through soft sediment, leaving a maze of pinnacles some 10 to 30 metres high. It's an easy half-day trip by taxi or minibus from the centre, and there's a small walking trail through the formations. Best visited in the morning before the afternoon clouds build.
