Quebrada de Palala

The Quebrada de Palala is a short, dramatic canyon just north of Tupiza, famous for the red-rock fins that locals call Los Cuernos del Diablo — the Devil's Horns. Bands of harder rock have weathered into vertical blades twenty metres tall, separated by sandy washes.

Most riders pass through Palala on a half-day horseback trip from town. The morning light is good for photographs, and the road through the canyon is easy enough to walk if you would rather skip the horse.

A story
The eroded ridges and fins along Palala were used as backdrops by Italian production crews shooting low-budget westerns in the 1960s, which is how locals first realised that travellers might pay to ride horses through their canyons.
