Cachoeira do Abade

Cachoeira do Abade is the most visited waterfall near Pirenópolis, a short drive from the town centre on a well-maintained dirt road. The falls drop about eight metres into a wide natural pool of clear, cool water set in a corridor of gallery forest — the cerrado gives way to denser, greener vegetation along the stream, making the setting feel markedly different from the dry savannah of the surrounding landscape.

The pool is swimmable and popular with families and weekenders from Brasília. Arrive early on weekends if you want peace; by midday the site can be busy. Several other waterfalls are within cycling or driving distance — the Vagafogo reserve has good trails and multiple swimming spots, and Fazenda Bonsucesso to the south has more remote options for those willing to walk further.

A story
Abade waterfall sits on private land that has been managed as a tourist site since the 1990s. The landowners charge a small entry fee and maintain a café and changing rooms at the site. In the early days, visitors simply turned up and swam freely; now the flow is managed to prevent erosion and the pool areas are marked off. The result is a slightly organised experience, but the falls themselves are as spectacular as ever.
