Santuário de Vida Silvestre Vagafogo

The Vagafogo Wildlife Sanctuary is a small private reserve a few kilometres from Pirenópolis, protecting a stretch of gallery forest and cerrado along the Vagafogo stream. It's one of the best places near town to see cerrado birdlife at close range — tanagers, toucans, woodpeckers, and antbirds are regularly seen from the trails, and the sanctuary keeps fruit-and-seed feeding stations that attract species that would otherwise be difficult to observe.

The trails are easy and well-maintained, passing through shade-giving gallery forest before opening onto drier cerrado slopes. The stream has several natural pools suitable for swimming. Entry is by a small fee paid at the gate. It is a calm, unpretentious place that rewards a slow pace; bring binoculars and water, and allow at least two hours to do the trails justice.

A story
Vagafogo was established in the 1980s by naturalist José Aylton Ferreira, who bought the land to prevent it from being cleared for farming. It became one of the first private nature reserves in Goiás. The sanctuary is now home to a remarkable collection of cerrado birds, including the endangered Brasília tapaculo and several species of antbird. Ferreira's original observation trails are still in use, and the site remains family-run.
