Rua do Mucugê

The Rua do Mucugê is the main artery of Arraial — a long, gently curving street of dirt and cobble that runs from the village centre down toward the beach of the same name. Both sides are lined with restaurants, boutiques, ice cream parlours, and craft shops, almost all housed in low whitewashed buildings hung with bougainvillea.

By day it is sleepy and useful for stocking up on sunscreen, swimwear, and grilled cheese on a stick. After dark it becomes a slow promenade: families wander, street performers fire up, restaurants light their candles, and the bars at the lower end begin to fill. It is the closest thing Arraial has to a high street, and walking its length end-to-end is a low-effort way to take the temperature of the village.
