Pedra Furada — "pierced rock" — is a sea stack with a large circular hole worn through its base, standing on the beach at the eastern end of Jericoacoara. It's the symbol of the place, appearing on every postcard, website, and social media feed connected to Jeri, and it earns its status: the arch frames a disc of sky or sea depending on angle, and at certain tidal states the wave action through the hole is dramatic.
The walk to Pedra Furada from the village takes about 15 minutes along the beach, or can be reached by the path around the headland at low tide. At sunset the light falls on the rock's western face in a way that makes it photogenic in a completely different register from the Sunset Dune — more intimate, less social. Swimming near the base of the rock is fine at low tide; at high tide the surging ocean around the base requires caution.
