Cabo Branco

Dramatic white cliffs at the easternmost point of the Americas

The easternmost point of the Americas, where the Atlantic begins and the continent ends. The cliffs here are striking — white-faced and dramatic — and the viewpoint gives you a clear sense of why this cape earned its name. Come in the morning when the light is behind you and the sea is at its most vivid.

A cycle path runs along the top of the falésias from Tambaú south to the lighthouse, making for a good morning ride. The Cabo Branco Lighthouse itself is a squat modernist structure that doesn't compete with the views, but the promontory around it is worth exploring — there are benches where you can sit and watch the sea, and the sense of being at the edge of a continent is genuine.

A story
At W34°44'55", the Cabo Branco point is the easternmost tip of the Americas — the place where the continent's land runs out. When the sun rises here, it rises on the Americas before anywhere else on the landmass. The Portuguese explorer Cabral may have seen this cape from his fleet in 1500, though historians debate the exact landfall.
