Recife Antigo

The original colonial heart of the city, occupying a small island wedged between the Capibaribe and the Atlantic. Recife Antigo holds the oldest streetscape — pastel-fronted townhouses, Dutch-era warehouses converted into restaurants and bars, and Rua do Bom Jesus, the cobbled street that anchors the weekend nightlife scene.

By day the district is quiet and good for wandering: the Marco Zero square sits at the water's edge with the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue and the Malakoff Tower a short walk away. On Sunday afternoons the area hosts a craft and food market, and on Tuesday evenings the Terça Negra free music sessions pull crowds onto the streets.
