Basilica and Convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo

A baroque Carmelite church and convent complex begun in the 17th century and finished, in stages, over more than two hundred years. The interior is richly carved gilded wood, with a coffered ceiling and a fine main altar. Nossa Senhora do Carmo is the patron of Recife, and the church is one of the city's most active religious sites.

Mass times are the easiest moment to see the building in use, but the building is open during the day for visitors. Skip if you have already done one of the bigger baroque churches in the city; pair with the Mercado de São José if you have not.
