The seat of the Pernambuco state government, a pink-and-white neoclassical palace facing onto the Praça da República. The interior is normally closed to visitors, but the exterior and the formal garden are the main reasons to walk through the square.
The plaza around the palace also holds the Santa Isabel Theater and a row of stately ministry buildings, and is the most coherent piece of 19th-century civic planning in the city.
