Shopping

Belo Horizonte has good shopping ranging from enormous street fairs to modern malls. The Sunday market on Avenida Afonso Pena is the highlight — bring extra luggage if you plan to go.

Avenida Afonso Pena Market

Every Sunday, the avenue shuts down for a massive outdoor market with thousands of individual stalls. Clothes, baskets, jewelry, toys, handmade souvenirs, and local art — particularly on the end closest to Parque Municipal. There is also a food section selling drinks and snacks. You could spend a full day here and still not cover it all.

Mercado Central

Off Avenida Augusto de Lima and Rua Curitiba, the Central Market is where locals shop. Because it is not aimed at tourists, you can find bargains on everything from household goods to crystal and ceramics. The food court serves excellent authentic meals at low prices.

BH Shopping

The first large-scale shopping center in Belo Horizonte, opened in 1979. Three stories, 300 stores, a food court, and a cinema. Located in the upscale Belvedere neighborhood.

Alta Vila Shopping Mall

Built around the Alta Vila Tower, which offers a panoramic view of the city. The mall includes shops, a cinema, and the Hard Rock Cafe Belo Horizonte. Worth a visit for the view even if you are not shopping.
