Things to Do

Belo Horizonte blends modernist architecture, green spaces, and a working-class energy that sets it apart from the beach cities. Oscar Niemeyer's Pampulha complex, the grand squares of the centro, and the surrounding mountain parks all reward exploration.

Praca da Liberdade

Liberty Square is the civic heart of old Belo Horizonte. The spacious park is lined with palms and fin-de-siecle government buildings, several of which have been converted into museums. A statue of Emperor Pedro I stands at the center, and there is a lighted fountain and a bandstand that occasionally hosts live music. It is one of the best spots in the city for a morning walk.

Lagoa da Pampulha

The artificial lake in the Pampulha district is surrounded by some of the city's most striking architecture. Oscar Niemeyer designed the Church of Sao Francisco de Assis on its shore, with murals by Candido Portinari — a small building but absolutely worth the visit. The lakefront is popular for jogging and cycling.

Church of Sao Francisco de Assis

Designed by Oscar Niemeyer with paintings by Portinari, this small church at Lagoa da Pampulha is one of the finest examples of Brazilian modernist architecture. The curved concrete roof and the azulejo tile mural on the exterior facade are striking.

Parque Municipal

Downtown's main green space, close to Praca da Estacao. The park has gardens, paths, ponds, canals, and a playground. A good place to escape the noise of the center for an hour.

Palacio das Artes

Cultural center at the edge of Parque Municipal with art exhibitions, a cinema, and theaters. A reliable stop if you want to see what is on while you are in town.

Praca da Estacao (Station Square)

The old train station area in downtown Belo Horizonte. The station building now houses the Museu de Artes e Oficios, and the square itself is a popular gathering spot.

Museu de Artes e Oficios

Housed in the beautiful old central train station, this museum showcases pre-industrial and traditional Brazilian craftsmanship. Free admission on Saturdays.

Museo Historico Abilio Barreto

The city history museum, documenting how Belo Horizonte was planned and built — photographs, blueprints, and artifacts from the city's founding era. Fairly modern but interesting if you want to understand the place.

Museu de Ciencias Naturais

A natural history museum near the PUC campus, focused on the wildlife and habitats of the Minas Gerais region. Good for kids.

Mineirao Stadium

One of Brazil's largest football stadiums, home to Clube Atletico Mineiro (founded 1908) in the Pampulha district. Even if you don't catch a match, the stadium is impressive from outside. If you can get tickets to a game, the atmosphere is electric.

Belo Horizonte Zoo

Founded in 1959, the zoo is home to around 1,200 animals, with a focus on Brazilian species including toucans, jaguars, and a wide range of reptiles and birds. A decent half-day outing, particularly with children.

Parque do Caraca

East of the city, this mountain park offers good hiking through Atlantic Forest at high elevation. It can get cold after sunset even in summer. There is a lake and trails of varying difficulty. Accessible by bus or car.
