Caminho Niemeyer

Niemeyer's waterfront promenade of futuristic public buildings along Guanabara Bay

The Caminho Niemeyer stretches along the downtown waterfront of Niterói, a series of bold white modernist buildings commissioned from Oscar Niemeyer starting in the 1990s. The complex includes the Teatro Popular — a swooping concrete shell resembling a helmet or a wave — the Memorial Roberto Silveira, the Fundação Oscar Niemeyer, and several other cultural institutions.

The buildings are best seen as a group, walking the promenade with the bay on one side and the sculptural facades on the other. The Teatro Popular hosts concerts and shows; check the program before visiting. The contrast between the brilliant white concrete and the deep blue of Guanabara Bay is at its best on a clear morning.

A story
Oscar Niemeyer designed the Caminho Niemeyer as a gift to his hometown — he was born in Rio but the project was his homage to the city across the bay. He began the complex in his early nineties and continued adding to it into his hundreds, completing the last building shortly before his death in 2012.
