Lagoa de Ibiraquera

Coastal lagoon popular for kite surfing and windsurfing

Lagoa de Ibiraquera is a large coastal lagoon separated from the open ocean by a narrow strip of dune and low scrub. The winds that funnel through the gap between the lagoon and the sea are strong and reliable, which has made this one of the better spots for kite surfing and windsurfing on the Santa Catarina coast. Schools and rental outfits operate along the lagoon edge. When you want a break from the wind and waves, the lagoon side offers calm, warm water for swimming — a different experience entirely from the surf beach on the other side of the dune.

The dune strip itself is worth walking. The path along the narrow band of land between the lagoon and the Atlantic — with flat water on one side and open ocean on the other — is one of the more scenic short hikes in the area, and costs nothing. Early morning the light is good and the crowds are thin. The lagoon is also used by local fishermen, and their boats add to the setting in the way fishing boats always do when they're actually being used for fishing rather than decoration.
