Getting There

Paranaguá sits at the end of the line from Curitiba, 90 km inland. The journey through the Serra do Mar is one of the great train rides of South America, and the main reason many travellers come down to the coast.

By train. The Serra Verde Express runs daily from Curitiba's Estação Ferroviária, descending nearly a thousand metres through tunnels and over viaducts in the Atlantic rainforest. The full route takes about three hours one way. Sit on the right-hand side going down for the best views. Tickets sell out — book in advance, particularly at weekends.

By bus. Frequent buses run from Curitiba's main rodoviária throughout the day; the trip takes about 90 minutes on the BR-277 highway. Cheaper than the train and faster, but no scenery.

By car. The same BR-277 is well paved and easy to drive. The descent through the mountains is steep but uneventful.

By air. Paranaguá has a small airport (PNG) used mainly for general aviation. The nearest commercial airport is Afonso Pena in Curitiba.
