The island is small — 24 kilometres at its longest axis — but you need transport. There is no public bus network. Most travellers rent a small 4x4, an ATV, or a motorbike from one of the dozen agencies on Atamu Tekena in Hanga Roa. Reckon on USD 60 to 100 a day for a Suzuki Jimny, less for a quad. There is no rental car insurance: damage is on you. Refuel at the single petrol station near the airport.
Mountain bikes are an option for the shorter routes and good for the loop to Ahu Akivi. Guided tours by van or jeep are the alternative — most agencies do a full-day east-coast circuit covering Tongariki, Rano Raraku, and Anakena, and a half-day south-coast circuit to Orongo. Drive slowly: the island has free-roaming horses and cattle, no street lighting outside town, and many of the side roads are unsealed.
