Easter Island is small but every kilometre matters. The major archaeological sites cluster on the coast — Ahu Tongariki on the east, Ahu Tahai near Hanga Roa for sunset, the moai quarry at Rano Raraku, the birdman village of Orongo on the rim of Rano Kau. Inland, the volcanic cones of Terevaka and Maunga Pui give long views over the whole island. Most people rent a car or quad bike, pay the national park fee on arrival (good for ten days), and work through the sites over four or five days.
