Just around the headland from Anakena, Ovahe is the island's other beach — smaller, pink-tinged, backed by a cliff of red volcanic rock and almost always empty. There are no facilities and no shade. The water is clear and the swimming is good in calm weather, but the surf picks up fast when the wind shifts and the cliff has had several rockfalls in recent years.
Access is by a steep informal path from the road above. The local authorities post warning signs from time to time and occasionally close the beach. Worth a half-hour stop on a circuit of the north coast.
