Poike Peninsula

Poike is the oldest of the island's three volcanoes and forms the entire eastern headland. The peninsula is mostly empty grassland, cut off from the rest of the island by the long shallow ditch of the Ko Te Ava O Iko — once thought to be a battle trench, more likely a horticultural feature. A few weathered moai stand at the inland edge.

The walk from the road up to the summit of Maunga Pu A Katiki and along the cliffs gives some of the best coastal views on the island, with the line of moai at Tongariki visible as black dots below. The terrain is exposed, the wind is steady, and the path is unmarked — a guide is sensible. Plan four to five hours for the full circuit.
