Eating Out

Puerto Montt is one of the great seafood cities of South America. The Reloncaví Sound and the channels south of here produce some of the best mussels, oysters, abalone, and conger eel anywhere — and the local speciality, curanto, is a ceremonial feast in itself: shellfish, sausages, smoked pork, and chicken steamed under leaves in a pit dug in the ground. The best place to try it is Angelmo, but a handful of restaurants in the centre do excellent fish on white tablecloths.
