The classic loop from Puerto Montt is Lago Llanquihue and the Osorno volcano: drive or bus north to Puerto Varas (20 minutes), continue around the western shore of the lake to Frutillar with its lakeside opera house, and complete the circuit via Las Cascadas and Petrohué Falls. Chiloé Island, an hour south by bus and ferry, is the other essential excursion.
