Cerro La Virgen is the small hill on the northern edge of central Rancagua, topped by a statue of the Virgin Mary visible across the city. A path winds up from the base — about thirty minutes of brisk walking — and reaches a terrace with views across the Cachapoal Valley to the Andes on a clear day.
Go in the late afternoon. The light on the snow-capped peaks behind Sewell and El Teniente is at its best then, and the climb is cooler. Locals come up for fitness; on weekends families picnic on the slopes.
