The Medialuna Monumental is the largest rodeo arena in Chile and the spiritual home of chilean rodeo — a distinctive horseback sport in which two huasos in stiff straw hats and brightly woven ponchos pin a young bull against the padded crescent wall of the arena. It is the country's second-most-popular sport after football, and Rancagua is its capital.
The national championship in late March or early April fills the seats with twelve thousand spectators, the parking lot with horseboxes, and the streets of Rancagua with huasos. Outside championship season the arena is quiet — visit anyway if you are passing, both for the scale of the venue and the small rodeo museum on site.
