Plazoleta del Yunque

A clearing in the forest south of San Juan Bautista, the Plazoleta del Yunque is the site where Alexander Selkirk is said to have built his shelter during his marooning between 1704 and 1708. The walk in takes about an hour from town through dense native forest, past gigantic chonta palms and the strange luma trees.

Today there is a small ranger's hut, a memorial, and a clearing surrounded by the slopes of Cerro El Yunque, the island's anvil-shaped peak. The site is part of the Juan Fernandez Archipelago National Park and is administered by CONAF.
