A small cove north-west of San Juan Bautista, Puerto Ingles is one of the only places on the island with anything resembling a beach. The water is cold but clear and the cove is protected from the worst of the swell. A short cave at the back of the beach is, according to local lore, where pirates once buried treasure.
The walk in from the village takes about an hour over a steep ridge. It is worth doing for the swim, the snorkelling among rock pools and fish, and the chance to sit in absolute silence with the South Pacific in front of you.
