San Juan Bautista

San Juan Bautista is the only village on the island and home to nearly all of its roughly 500 residents. It sits on Cumberland Bay, a horseshoe of deep blue water hemmed in by basalt cliffs and the green wall of the El Yunque massif. The settlement is little more than a single waterfront strip, a school, a church, a fishing co-op, and dirt streets climbing up the slope.

Life here runs on the lobster catch and on the occasional arrival of supply boats and small planes. You will not find ATMs or much in the way of shops, so bring cash and patience. The bay is calm enough to swim in and clear enough to see fish from the pier.
