The Lagunas Altiplánicas are among the most beautiful excursions from San Pedro de Atacama: high, cold lakes set below volcanoes and pale desert ridges. The usual route focuses on Miscanti and Miñiques, where blue water, yellow grass, black lava, and snow-dusted peaks make the landscape look almost diagrammatic in its clarity.
The lagoons sit at altitude, so treat the trip with the same respect you would give any high Andean outing. Move slowly, bring layers, and do not underestimate the sun. Many tours combine the lagoons with Toconao, Socaire, or the Atacama salt flat, but the lakes deserve time on their own; the stillness is the point.
