Salar de Tara

Remote salt flat and wetland excursion in the high country east of San Pedro de Atacama

Salar de Tara lies far out in the high desert east of San Pedro de Atacama, where salt flats, wetlands, and eroded volcanic rock share the same hard light. It is less immediate than Valle de la Luna, but the reward is space: long horizons, vicuñas, birds, and a stronger sense of the Andean plateau.

Access depends on weather, vehicle rules, and the condition of the high roads, so this is usually a guided excursion rather than a casual drive. If you go, take the altitude seriously. The scenery is spare and beautiful, but it asks more of you than the sights close to town.
