Lascar Volcano

High, active Atacama volcano climbed on demanding guided trips from San Pedro.

Lascar Volcano is one of the serious high-altitude objectives around San Pedro de Atacama. Rising above 5,500 metres, it is an active stratovolcano with a broad crater and views across the salt flats, lagoons, and neighbouring cones of the central Andes. This is not a casual viewpoint; altitude and weather are the whole story.

Climbs are normally done with experienced local guides after acclimatisation. The approach starts high, but the final ascent still demands fitness, warm clothing, and respect for volcanic conditions. On a clear day the reward is stark and enormous: sulphur-stained rock, thin air, and the Atacama spread out below in bands of brown, white, and blue.
