Every Sunday and public holiday, Bogota closes over 120 km of its main roads to motor traffic from 7am to 2pm, creating a vast cycling and walking circuit across the city. The Ciclovía started in 1974 and now draws up to two million people on a good Sunday — it is one of the largest recurring public events in the world.
Rent a bicycle from any of the dozens of stalls that appear along the route, or simply walk. The circuit passes through La Candelaria, the Zona Rosa, Chapinero, and north to Usaquén, giving you an unusual perspective on a city that can feel chaotic from a car. Food vendors, exercise groups, and musicians set up along the route. It is one of the best ways to understand the scale and character of the city. The Ciclovía has been copied by dozens of cities worldwide, but Bogota's is still the original.
