Tren Turístico de la Sabana

Steam-hauled heritage train to Zipaquirá or Cajicá from La Sabana station

On Sundays and holidays, a steam-hauled heritage train departs from the old La Sabana station west of the city centre on excursions to Zipaquirá (for the salt cathedral) and the colonial town of Cajicá. The journey takes about two hours each way and passes through the flat savanna that surrounds Bogota.

The train itself is more interesting than the destination — the steam locomotives date from the early 20th century and are in regular operating condition. The carriages are old but comfortable. Book tickets in advance at the La Sabana station on Calle 13. The experience is popular with families and nostalgia-hunters, and it pairs well with a visit to Zipaquirá's salt cathedral.
