The beaches that get the most attention are on the eastern side of the island — calm, turquoise water backed by palms — but the quieter west coast has good swimming too. The famous "seven colours" of the sea are most visible from the cays, where the varying depth of the coral shelf creates bands of colour running from near-white to deep violet-blue.
